Welcome! My name is Truelian, and I’ll be your local periodic fabler.
The Periodic Fables aim to reimagine childhood tales with a scientific flair to promote science literacy at all age levels. The idea bloomed in July 2020, after I created a Zine about my lab project for my summer research fellowship. I dug out a stack of dusty construction paper, selected a muted lavender sheet, creased it with my fingernails, and uncapped a fine black Sharpie. I doodled cartoon epithelial cells and bacteria, the Sharpie digging softly into the side of my middle finger, and I realized that I missed using creative outlets to express scientific concepts. I used to write sonnets about RNA and dance about sustainable agriculture years ago. What was stopping me now?
With that in mind, I was determined to find a way to tap into my creativity to communicate science. I have brainstormed numerous ideas for The Periodic Fable, and I look forward to sharing them with you!
I’ll be posting stories every Monday—sign up now so you don’t miss the first fable. In the meantime, tell your friends!
